Prison officer jailed for raping female inmates

A PRISON worker will spend at least 20 months behind bars for raping female inmates.

David Howard Wright, 53, worked as a trade instructor in the kitchen at Brisbane Women's Correctional Centre in Wacol when he raped and sexually assault 10 different women over a three-year period.

Wright pleaded guilty to four counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and 12 counts of doing an indecent act; offences which occurred between December 2008 and June 2011.

When being sentenced in Brisbane District Court on Friday, the court heard Wright made the women give him oral sex. Wright believed the women had consented.

All of his 10 victims worked in the prison's kitchen, which was one of the most sought-after jobs in the jail, the court heard.

"By your offending you repeatedly abused your position of authority," Judge Terry Martin said.

"The complainants were plainly vulnerable."

Judge Martin said Wright had no criminal history and that the rapist would be "publicly shamed" from his offending.

"Further in my view it is highly likely that you will suffer imprisonment more acutely than the usual prisoner," he said.

Wright will be eligible for parole in February 2017.
