Powerful front to create ‘significant’ rain event in Qld

HOMES are without electricity, trees and power lines have been brought down and residents in three states are on alert as flood watches and weather warnings remain in place.

Parts of South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania have been battered by damaging winds and very cold air as a powerful frontal system blasted in from the Southern Ocean.

Wind gusts of up to 120km were recorded in SA, and a man was killed by a falling tree while clearing storm debris on Monday, ABC reported.

People in southern parts of New South Wales and in the ACT are being warned to prepare for damaging winds and possible blizzards in alpine areas.

The cold front, hash tagged by the Bureau of Meteorology #MonsterLow, is expected to move east off the coast before it reaches Queensland.

But Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe said it would send a blast of cold air into the state during the day on Wednesday, and the remnants of the system would help to create a new, significant rain event in Queensland.

"There's a top of 25C today, there'll be a top of 20C tomorrow as the cool change comes through, and tops of 18C for Thursday and Friday," he said

"Behind that (powerful frontal) system upper cold air is going to interact with the warm sea surface temperatures in tropical Queensland and so we're going to see a rain event develop in the tropics and central parts of Queensland."

Predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology are for widespread rain in Queensland.

Mr Sharpe said there was "a lot of uncertainty with this system", but parts of the state could experience significant rainfall, even in the west.

"Some places will get more than 200mm, so it'll feel like summer to people it'll be that heavy at times," he said.

"It's unusual to see such a significant rain event occurring in Queensland at this time of year."

In the south east there will be the chance of showers on Thursday, and a more significant chance of showers from Friday through to Monday.
