Potent knows rivals will be gunning for him

SHOOTING: Experience has tempered the confidence of Australia's Warren Potent ahead of the men's 50m rifle prone shooting event in Rio.

Potent, 54, has a sole bronze medal to his name from the past four Games and is well aware of the challenge that lies ahead in his fifth.

Denmark's Torben Grimmel, who beat Potent for the gold at this year's World Cup, will be favourite, but the Aussie veteran says the competition will be "very open".

"There's probably about 20, maybe 25, who could get into the final, and out of that, 15 could get on to the podium," he said.

Potent became Australia's first rifle shooting world champion in 2014 in Granada, Spain, in the 50m prone. He also won that event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and came second in Delhi in 2010.

Men's 50m rifle prone qualifying, tomorrow (10pm AEST)
