Popular Byron-based teacher dies in Indon surfing accident

THE Lennox and Byron communities are in mourning following the news that Peter Luke was killed in a surfing incident in huge five metre waves off the Indonesian Island of Sumbawa.

The popular 27-year-old physical education school teacher and football player moved from Warrnambool, Victoria, to Byron Bay, in 2007, to study teaching at Southern Cross University.

In October 2013, Mr Luke travelled to Canada where he worked at a resort in the renowned ski destination, Whistler.

Due to arrive back in Australia within weeks, Mr Luke and two mates went on an Indonesian surf safari, on his way back to the Northern Rivers.

On Monday, the trio set off on a guided boat trip, chasing the perfect wave, when they found waves at a notorious spot called Scar Reef.

West Sumbawa police chief Teddy Hendyawan Syarif said the surf at the spot known as Scar Reef was huge at the time Mr Luke was killed.

"The victim's death was caused by a wave smashing into him, which at that time was massive, up to five metres high," he told reporters.

Surfers are lured to the island of Sumbawa, west of Bali, by the promise of huge perfect waves that break over shallow reefs.

Lennox Head Football Club took to its Facebook page to pay tribute to their former captain, and mate of many.

"Petey was a much loved member of the Sharks family and will be sorely missed by many," the club wrote.

Mr Luke's body is being flown back to Warrnambool, where his funeral is expected to be held.

He is survived by his parents Allan and Mary and his sister Laura.
