THE Shell service station on the corner of River and Kerr streets in Ballina will be closed until the end of June.

The servo is currently undergoing remediation works.

Ballina Shire Council environmental health officer, Rachael Jenner, said the company had council approval for the works, but a formal development application had not been required.

She said the owners of neighbouring properties had been advised of the work.

"This was classified as a category two remediation of the site, so a DA was not needed," she said.

"The company is replacing the underground fuel tanks.

"They are also installing a stormwater treatment tank.

"It is expected the works will be finished by June 30."

Ms Jenner said the service station would remain badged as a Shell servo once the work had been complete.

A new lessee will manage the business once it reopens.
