Toddler and boy, 5, savaged by large dog at family home

AN 18-MONTH-OLD girl has been savaged on the head by a large dog at a Wyreema home.

The toddler and her five-year-old brother were taken to Toowoomba Hospital after the attack at an Ashford Dr home shortly before 9am yesterday.

Cambooya police officer-in-charge Senior Constable Cameron Warman said the Hodgson Vale siblings were visiting their aunt's house when the incident occurred.

Snr Const Warman said a 12-month-old mastiff cross attacked the children after they arrived with their aunt at the property.

He said the aunt had opened the garage door.

"The dog has run out and attacked the kids on the driveway," Snr Const Warman said.

He said the dog lived at the home and was owned by the woman's adult son.

"The older child just had some scratches.

"The younger child had a piece of her scalp torn off."

Both children were taken to Toowoomba Hospital, where they were yesterday in a stable condition.

Animal management officers from the Toowoomba Regional Council yesterday seized the dog.

A Toowoomba Regional Council spokesman confirmed the dog in question had been seized, pending further investigation of the incident.

"Council will take appropriate action as per State Government legislation, once the investigation is complete," the spokesman said.
