Police dog handler assaulted in Coffs Harbour
POLICE have this morning released details how one of their own, police dog handler Senior Constable Mark Baxter was king-hit by a man in Coffs Harbour overnight.
On patrol of the Coffs Harbour CBD, Const. Baxter was flagged down by a member of the public who had witnessed a man allegedly stealing copper wiring from a telegraph pole on the corner of the Pacific Hwy and Park Ave.
Const Baxter approached a man in the area, who then began to walk down Studio Lane.
The officer followed the man, before going to the rear of the police car to release his police dog.
As Const Baxter left the car, a man allegedly came up beside him and punched the officer, before a struggle ensued and the man ran away.
Emergency services responded and assisted the officer, who was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus for treatment to facial injuries, including a suspected broken nose. He has been since been released.
Police from the Coffs-Clarence Local Area Command attended and patrolled the area, when they located a man on Nimbin Place.
Ricky Waye, 36, of Guyra and Coffs Harbour, was arrested at the scene and taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station.
He was charged with assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty, causing actual bodily harm, and resisting an officer in the execution of duty.
The man appeared in Coffs Harbour Local Court yesterday and has been refused bail.
Coffs Clarence Command acting Superintendent Brendan Gormon urged anyone with information into the alleged incident to come forward.
6.30AM: POLICE have arrested a man after he allegedly punched an officer in the face at Coffs Harbour last night.
Just after 9.30pm last night, a Police Dog Unit was patrolling Coffs Harbour CBD when a member of the community flagged down the fully marked police vehicle on Grafton Street.
The officer stopped and spoke to that person, before approaching another man who was nearby.
The man allegedly walked away into Studio Lane, the officer followed before going to the rear of the police vehicle to release the police dog.
The man then allegedly punched the officer in the face, before a struggle ensued and the man ran from the area.
Emergency services responded and assisted the injured officer, who was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus, for treatment to facial injuries. He has been since been released.
