Police make arrest relating to 1983 cold murder case

HOMICIDE detectives investigating the cold-case murder of Victorian teenager Michelle Buckingham have made an arrest in Brisbane where they are applying for the suspect's extradition.

Michelle was 16 when she was discovered stabbed to death in a drain at Kialla in October, 1983.

She was last seen alive walking towards a caravan park in the country town of Shepparton.

Following a recent tip-off from a former resident, detectives been tracking a man in Brisbane, who, according to News.com, once lived at the Shepparton caravan park for several months.

The 52-year-old was arrested early Wednesday and taken to the Brisbane Magistrates Court.

He was expected to be flown to Melbourne on Wednesday night.
