A TEEN didn't know she was pregnant when she went into labour and gave birth on the kitchen floor of her New Zealand home.

Emma Crofts-Wilson was 39 weeks pregnant when her now 11-month-old daughter, Hannah-Maria was born.

The 19-year-old Christchurch resident was home alone when after experiencing what she thought was a stomach ache, felt the urge to push and looked down to see her baby's head.

Ms Crofts-Wilson told Carters News Agency: "I didn't know what was happening. I just felt a major stinging feeling and when I looked down I saw a head.

"That's when it hit me. The next thing I knew, I had a baby in my arms."

The first time mum used a pair of kitchen scissors to cut the umbilical cord before sending a text message to her mum.

"Then I texted my mum something along the lines of, 'please don't be mad or angry, but I've just had a baby. I don't know what to do.

The pair were raced to hospital where Hannah-Maria was declared healthy.

Looking back, Ms Crofts-Wilson said she didn't realise she was pregnant because she suffers from irregular periods and didn't notice any weight gain.

She said she fell pregnant after a one-night stand with an Australian man on holidays in New Zealand with friends.

"I don't know his name, so I wouldn't even know where to look for him, but my friends and family have been so supportive of us."

University of Stirling Midwifery Research professor Helen Cheyne said in a piece on The Conversation, cases of  "cryptic pregnancy" - also known as "pregnancy denial" - are not particularly rare.

"In fact, they are estimated to occur in around one in 2,500 cases, suggesting around 320 cases in the UK annually, or a potential headline story almost every day."

In April 2016, a woman in the UK gave birth to a 7lb baby on the first day of her new job after not realising she was pregnant.

The Daily Mail reported Klara Dollan had no morning sickness, back pain or visible baby bump before she gave birth.

Michelle Thorpe was 20 when she gave birth to her daughter after seeing a gynaecologist two weeks before and being prescribed antibiotics for a pelvic infection.

Ms Thorpe told her story to The Guardian.

She said she presented to hospital with stomach pains and an ultrasound revealed she was 42 weeks pregnant and she was in labour.
