Planning underway for Alstonville's 150th birthday next year

A STEERING committee has been formed to start planning the celebrations for Alstonville's sesquicentenary year in 2015.

The 150th birthday marks the time Andrew Freeborn settled the area.

Local historian and steering committee member Ian Kirkland said Mr Freeborn made his selection of land in December 1865, but the anniversary celebrations would be held from September 11-13.

Fellow steering committee member Les Wiles said while the main celebrations would be held in September, community groups were being encouraged to organise events throughout the year.

Mr Wiles said the event would not be just an historical celebration, rather it would be a celebration of 150 years of the community.

The sesquicentenary celebrations will be launched at this year's New Year's Eve celebrations at the Alstonville Showground.
