Search ends for man missing off Fraser Island

UPDATE: THE Australian Maritime Safety Authority has ended the search for a missing man 55km east of Fraser Island after they were unsuccessful in finding him on Wednesday.

An AMSA spokeswoman said the decision to end the operation was made after an extensive but unsuccessful search was carried out until last light on Wednesday and was supported by expert medical advice which looked at the survivability of the situation.

The spokeswoman said an area of 820 square nautical miles, or2816 sq km, were searched and conditions were moderate with seas of 2m and 25-knot winds.

She said the seafarer was noticed missing from the Liberian-flagged ship MV Sea Amity about 10.20pm on Tuesday, April 14, and after searching for the man, the ship continued its voyage to Newcastle.

EARLIER UPDATE: Six helicopters, three planes and two vessels are searching for a man missing about 55km east of Fraser Island.

An Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman said the man was noticed to be missing from the Liberian-flagged cargo ship about 10.20pm on Tuesday night.

She said a two-hour search was undertaken by the cargo ship from that time, but was unsuccessful and AMSA was notified by an agent of the ship at 7.30am on Wednesday.

The spokeswoman said AMSA's Cairns-based search and rescue aircraft, a Hervey Bay Water Police vessel and a Volunteer Marine Rescue vessel from Tin Can Bay were some of the craft involved in the search.

AMSA has issued a broadcast for other ships in the area to keep a look out for the man.

A Hervey Bay water police spokesman said the man went missing from an international cargo ship about 10.20pm on Tuesday night.

The spokesman said he was wearing a white t-shirt and dark pants.
