A TOOWOOMBA Pizza Capers store has featured on a television show profiling those at the forefront of Australia's booming small business sector.

The Franchise Show is a Channel 7 program that focuses on the positives, the pitfalls and personalities of franchising.

The Ridge Shopping Centre Pizza Capers franchisee Michael Marsh was the star of the feature last week.

He spoke about the business and tips for those wanting to start a business.

"We chose to open a franchise for the support as we hadn't been in business before," he said.

"Research is one of the most important things when choosing a business. It has to fit in with family needs and is something you can see yourself doing for years."

He said there were challenges they had to face over the years.

"The biggest challenge for us is the rollercoaster of sales, chasing sales all the time and being on top of our business," he said.

"Some of the skills you need are dealing with customers, being fast on your feet and enjoying the hustle.

"Customers are the lifeblood of our business and getting to know customers on a personal basis makes our job easier and gives us that real local feeling."

Mr Marsh also gave some advice to others wanting to start their own business.

"The difference between owning a franchise and going into business by yourself is that you have some proven background and sales data that you can rely on as opposed to going it alone," he said.

"My advice for those going into small business is have a crack. You never know, you might surprise yourself."

The Franchise Show airs on Channel 7 on Sundays at 12.30pm.
