Pilot injured after plane flips at Sandy Beach

THE pilot of a light plane has been injured after crashing into an airstrip at Sandy Beach this afternoon.

The 76-year-old male pilot had attempted to land at a private airstrip on Johnsons Rd when a strong gust of wind caught the aircraft and forced it to crash and overturn.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene for head injuries and he was later admitted to Coffs Harbour Health Campus in a stable condition.

He was the sole occupant in the plane at the time of the crash.

The light aircraft had been travelling from Lismore and witnesses at the scene said they had seen the pilot make three prior attempts at landing before the crash.

Fire & Rescue NSW and Coffs Harbour Police were also notified and responded to the scene.

An investigation is underway.
