Perform reviews and find ways to improve

SO, HOW often do you review your performance, as an individual or as a business?

Regular performance review is the best way to understand what improvement or changes are required to the way that you are delivering your products or services.

Remember, as a small business, you are only as good as your last job, or your last project. And, you may or may not know how well you have performed, unless you ask someone (and maybe even ask some pretty tough questions). There are three levels of performance review you can do: intrinsic, internal or external.

Intrinsic performance reviews are those that you do on yourself. The good thing about these is that you are usually tougher on yourself than others might be. Do an honest personal review of how you are performing, using a solid review criteria, and you may not even need to ask anyone else to do a review. It may help, though, to bounce your results off others, to do a double check of your review score.

Internal reviews are those done by people within your business. This is the next level of performance review, and these are done by those closest to you, and to your work. Ask your colleagues to be brutally honest with you and how you are performing. Use 360-degree feedback processes, by engaging people who work for you, people who you report to, and even people you work with.

Finally, an external review can be done, and these will involve people outside of your organisation, generally your customers or your suppliers. Check in with your customers on a regular basis, and ask them for feedback on how you can improve what you are doing and what you are supplying. Your clients will generally be very honest with you and, if you take their advice, this can be the best way to improve your business and your performance overall. Don't be too precious, and take the feedback too harshly, remember it is not a personal attack, but an assessment of a project or a deliverable.

Be willing to implement changes, and to improve how you do your work, and you will continuously improve all aspects of what you do and what you deliver.
