Penguin pinched from aquarium

THREE men will front court next month after allegedly stealing a penguin from an aquarium at Main Beach on the Gold Coast on Saturday night.

Police believe the men broke into an aquarium at Main Beach on Saturday night.

After the penguin was noticed missing, a search for the bird, named "Dirk", was conducted around Broadwater on Sunday.

On Sunday night, Gold Coast Police found Dirk "safe and well" and he was returned home. After a tip off from a member of the public, police arrested three men at a house in Southport.

An 18-year-old, a 20-year-old and a 21-year-old were charged trespass, stealing and unlawfully keep protected animal, an offence under the Nature Conservation Act.

They will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on May 2.
