Penalty goals get Trojans across line

FOUR second-half penalty goals enabled Lennox Head to beat Lismore 12-10 in Far North Coast rugby union at Williams Reserve, Lennox Head, on Saturday.

Five-eighth Connor Winchester slotted all four attempts, with the Trojans having now won all three of their games this season.

Lismore fullback Dean Wilson scored the only try of the game in the first half.

City is yet to win this season but is showing signs of improvement.

The only negative for Lennox Head was flanker Harry Bungate being sent off for a dangerous tackle in the final minute.

It was his 100th game at the club and he is now likely to spend some time on the sideline.

Elsewhere, Byron Bay fullback Harvey Bell had no trouble scoring tries in a 43-5 thumping of Casino at the Byron Bay Recreation Ground.

He scored five, with the win putting Byron Bay second on the ladder.

Bell was a standout playing halfback for Far North Coast at the NSW Country Championships the previous weekend.

Coach Paul Jeffery said he had been unlucky not to earn a place in the NSW Country Cockatoos team.

Another player unlucky not to get a call-up to the main Country squad is Ballina five-eighth Grant Knight.

Knight was relentless in a 53-20 win over Bangalow at Quays Reserve, Ballina.

He scored three tries and put the Rebels' back three under all sorts of pressure with his kicking game.

Winger Ryan Boardman had one of his best games in the top grade with a try-scoring double in the first half.

His second try gave the Seahorses a healthy 27-10 lead right on half-time.

Bangalow had the better start and were up 10-0 early in the first half.

But the Seahorses went on to dominate possession and the floodgates soon opened.

In the other game, Grafton had a 22-10 win over Southern Cross University at Grafton Rugby Park.

The Rats fought hard and were in the contest until a late try sealed it for the Redmen.

Wollongbar-Alstonville had the bye.
