WORLD champion surfer Joel Parkinson has had a bumpy start to the 2013 ASP World Tour with a surprise loss in the non-elmination Quiksilver Pro round one heat.

Despite being on home turf, Parko was narrowly outperformed by fellow Aussie Matt Wilkinson.

Wildcard Brent Dorrington finished third.

Wilkinson said he had been surfing Snapper Rocks for the past week.

"I think I've been picking all the wrong tides for my free surfs because I've been struggling," he said.

"I went out there then and I followed Brento and he got a smaller one that looked really nice and I got the one behind it and it just ran forever and ended up being a 9.9 which is a pretty good confidence booster."

Parkinson will have a chance to stay in the competition in the sudden-death second heat.
