AFL: Sydney Swans young gun Tom Papley has been placed on the long-term injury list and faces a delayed start to the 2017 season.

Papley, who had a stellar rookie season which saw him secure his spot in a star-studded Swans side, has been battling a knee concern since surgery in December.

He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday. His placement on the long-term injury list means Papley is ineligible to return until Round 2 of the home and away season.

Swans head of football Tom Harley said the club was disappointed that Papley had battled through an interrupted pre-season.

"We expect him to recover quickly from this latest surgery and return to playing from as early as Round 2,” Harley said.

"Part of the consideration to operate certainly included where Tom is at with regard to his recovery from compartment syndrome.

"We are very confident that by addressing his knee now with minor arthroscopic surgery, he will have the best chance to make an impact when he returns.”

Papley kicked three goals in his debut against Collingwood in Round 1 last season, finishing with 29 majors from 20 matches.

He starred in the finals series kicking nine goals in the first three finals before going goalless in the Grand Final. The 20-year-old earned a Rising Star nomination in Round 5.
