Palmer finds few friends on his home turf

CLIVE Palmer's headline-grabbing antics have made him something of a pariah on the streets of Fairfax.

Outrage at the PUP leader's comments on Q&A on ABC TV and a general discontent with his work in the electorate have many turning up their nose at the mention of his name.

It was hard to find any Palmer supporters on the streets of Coolum yesterday.

"He's an absolute idiot," Keith Hammond said.

"He's just come across as somebody who's only interested in himself. I have no time for the man whatsoever."

"He should be thrown out," Ralph Waller, a long-time Mudjimba resident, said.

"You're not allowed to have racism in bloody politics. Whoever voted for him has no idea about politics."

Some said Mr Palmer had become a running joke in Fairfax because of his controversial public statements.

"Every time he opens his mouth, he puts his foot in it," a Coolum resident said.

"He's letting his electorate and his party down."

Many were still angry about Mr Palmer's handling of the former Hyatt Coolum Resort.

"He says one thing, then does something else the following day," Mr Waller said.

"He ruined Coolum, and he ruined the Hyatt."

Mr Palmer found some support outside the electorate for his comments about the Chinese Government.

"Well, I agree with some of it, but he shouldn't be saying it," Sarah Schmidt, who was visiting from Brisbane, said.

While most were happy to label the mining magnate an "idiot" and a "fool", there were some who believed we were in the grip of yet another Clive Palmer publicity stunt designed to catapult him into the headlines once again.

"He loves to be hated and that's part of his publicity," Coolum resident Sue Murphy said.
