TMM Group purchases mining stalwart Windsor Earthmoving

WITH a clientele that reads like a laundry list of major players in the resources industry - including BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance, Isaac Plains, Peabody and Anglo American - Brisbane's TMM Group has further expanded its business buying the Central Queensland's Windsor Earthmoving Contractors.

TMM management would not discuss how much it paid for the earthmoving firm, but it would lift TMM's staff numbers from 50 to about 200 and push it towards a turnover above $90 million a year.

Windsor will keep its name but happily share its own list of clients, including Thiess, Leighton Contractors and Macmahon.

Windsor director Ian Windsor will also remain as manager.

Directors Carl O'Hehir and Dave Mason said that for TMM the deal gave it the capacity to fight harder for contracts.

"The big advantage is that we can have discussions earlier in the process," Mr O'Hehir said.

"We're taking on the design that will lead to the construction and execution phase.

"That gives us an advantage over guys who are waiting for tender documents to be released."

The shared experience also means Windsor benefits from TMM's corporate contacts built up from Brisbane, while TMM gains the networks built from years of Windsor operating from the mining town of Coppabella, in the heart of the action.

The deal follows more than a year of discussions with TMM outperforming competitors also keen to acquire Windsor, a success Mr O'Hehir attributed to having worked with the earthmovers for about a decade.

At the moment, most of TMM's contracts are with mines in the Bowen Basin but it plans to build on its already fledgling growth in working on Surat Basin gas projects.
