Royals seen as celebrities not subjects

THE fight against the Commonwealth is growing strong, and we have our staunchly monarchist prime minister to thank.

Australians are rushing to catch a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who are touring the countryside, but republicans suggest we see them as celebrities, not subjects.

While the photogenic pair are adored, it appears Tony Abbott's love of the old country is driving us away from the Union Jack.

Australian Republican Movement national director David Morris said it was Prime Minister Tony Abbott's pledge of allegiance to the Queen that really drove support late last year.

It really took off when he went back to having imperial knights and dames.

"In the two weeks following that decision, there was a massive increase."

Mr Morris said it drove more support for a republic than anything else in the past decade.

He said the next great chance for Australia to become a republic would come when Mr Abbott leaves office.
