Origin suspends gas drilling due to asbestos scare

ORIGIN Energy has suspended drilling operations across 12 sites in south west central Queensland after drilling fluids were found to contain asbestos.

The fluid was supplied by Australian Mud Company.

In a statement, Origin said immediate precautionary action was taken "to safeguard our employees, contractors and landholders"

All stocks of affected material have been quarantined and accounted for throughout the supply chain from storage warehouse to site, and specialist waste removal experts are in the process of removing that material from each location for safe disposal.

In the interim, an alternative product has been sourced.

Australian Mud Company has withdrawn the product from the market.

Origin is the upstream operator of the Australia Pacific LNG project.
