New online initiative helping improve education in rural Aus

REMOTE high school students will be able to get online to study maths and science under a new $900,000 pilot program run by the Regional Universities Network.

The network will partner with more than 20 schools, the CSIRO and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute to encourage study of the subjects in regional areas.

A virtual centre will be created to link Year 9 and 10 students from their classrooms to experts to run experiments and study maths online.

The project aims to address the lower performance of disadvantaged students in maths and science and could lead to a nation-wide roll-out.
