One dead and house destroyed in horror blaze

A neighbour who woke to massive flames outside his Bundoora home said "everyone was screaming" during the house fire that has left one person dead.

The blaze in Victoria ended in tragedy after emergency services found a person dead inside, despite a neighbour who who desperately tried to break down the front door.

Neighbour Ramen Pannu said he woke to screaming and was confronted by massive flames outside his Gordon St home shortly after 7.30am this morning.

"Everyone was screaming, it's a very quiet street and we've never had anything bad happen," Mr Pannu said.

"The fire was very intense … the flames were at least six or seven metres above the house," he said.

Emergency services rushed to the home after a neighbour reported the house was ablaze.

A MFB spokesman said the neighbour attempted to alert the occupants, believed to be an elderly couple, by banging on the front door as flames engulfed the house.

Mr Pannu said he rushed into the street and saw one neighbour attempting to break down the front door to rescue the elderly resident.

"One of the neighbours tried to break in the door so we could bring the person out but the flames were too intense."

"There were about ten neighbours running around trying to help," he said. "It is very sad what happened, we lost a life."

Police say one person was found dead at the home.

"Arson and explosive squad investigators are currently at the scene of a fatal house fire which occurred in Bundoora earlier this morning," Victoria Police spokeswoman Jess Brennan said.

"A deceased person was located at the property.

"Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire and an arson chemist will examine the scene in an attempt to ascertain how the fire started."

A relative arrived at the property this morning and was being assisted by police.

Four crews were called to the scene and took 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control.
