Old Seagulls will come out to play

SOME of the former stars of Ballina rugby league will dust off the boots and get reacquainted with the smell of liniment when they take part in an Old Boys Legends match at the Seagulls ground at 5pm on Saturday.

The club also hopes that the current crop of first-graders, under new coach Don Dickson, will be on show in a trial match against Casino RSM Cougars after the Old Boys’ match.

Seagulls officials were awaiting confirmation of the trial just as the Advocate went to press, but were confident it would go ahead.

In the Old Boys match, players from the grand-final winning teams of 1982 and 1989 will take to the field.

Among them will be former coach and player Al Perry, former captain-coach Rod Sironen, and club stalwarts such as Brenton Bowen, Mick Koellner and Brad Mansfield.

The trial match against the Cougars also will feature a strong Ballina connection, with former Seagulls’ halfback Troy Johnstone now coaching Casino.

The entertainment will not be confined to the field, with DJ Nathan Fryer playing hits of the 1970s, 80s and 90s in the clubhouse after the football.

“Anyone can come along,” said a club spokesman.

“Even if they’re not interested in the football, they can come along and enjoy the music.”
