A DEVELOPMENT application has been lodged for $20,000 worth of improvements to the Northern Rivers Community Gallery and the Gallery Cafe in Ballina.

The works include removing a false internal wall, converting three windows to French doors and creating a new doorway.

It is hoped the renovations will improve the connection between the gallery, the cafe and the cafe deck.

The works will also improve circulation for the cafe staff and provide external awnings to protect patrons from the weather.

There will be more natural light and ventilation.

The building was constructed in 1927 as the Ballina Municipal Council Chambers, but was adapted in 2007 for use as a gallery and cafe.

The council's Kate Gahan, who prepared the Statement of Heritage Impact for the development application, wrote that aspects of the proposed alterations would impact the heritage values of the building.

But she also said that those impacts would be limited.

"Alterations are minimal and additions are sympathetic to the building's historic fabric and embodied heritage values," she wrote.

"Alterations pose a minimal aesthetic impact externally and internally.

"Additions continue to enable important aspects of the building's fabric and layout to be 'read'."

Ms Gahan has recommended that the work be done by a "suitably qualified tradesperson who has knowledge of the care required when working with historic buildings, or is suitably briefed in the heritage values of the building and the necessary care required to undertake this work".

The development application for the renovations is currently being assessed by council staff.
