Off-duty cop helps catch crooks

TWO good Samaritans, one of them an off-duty police senior sergeant, came to the aid of a man who was bashed and robbed in a Goodna car park.

The 57-year-old victim had just purchased pizza from a take-away store at the St Ives Shopping Centre when he was attacked about 10pm Monday.

Police said the man was about to get back into his car when three men - one of them holding an iron bar - approached him.

The man was attacked and robbed of his pizzas.

Ipswich Detective Senior Sergeant Gary Dixon said the victim then took refuge back inside the pizza shop, where two other customers came to his aid.

They accompanied the victim back outside to the car park, where he was able to point out the offenders.

Police allege a physical altercation then took place, which resulted in two of the offenders being restrained until police arrived.

"The third offender escaped with the pizzas," Snr Sgt Dixon said.

The 57-year-old victim was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with a cut on his forehead and bruises while two other men were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

A 20-year-old Petrie man and a 19-year-old Goodna man were both taken into custody and charged.

Keenan Lee Gourley, 20, from Petrie and Jerome Blade Harker, 19, from Goodna both appeared briefly at Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday.

Each man has been charged with three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and in company, and one count of robbery with actual violence.

Neither applied for bail.

Their case will next be heard on April 4.

Police are still hunting the third offender.

Anyone with information that could assist police should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
