Number of young children enrolled in school has risen

AUSTRALIA had 60,000 more children enrolled in preschool or kindergarten last year than in 2008, new research shows.

Figures released this week by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed 266,000 four and five-year-old children were enrolled in a program in the year before full-time school in 2012.

The proportion of children enrolled had risen eight points to 89%.

The report, Preschool Education, Australia 2012, also revealed an increase of 3500 over the same period in indigenous children receiving a preschool program in the year before school.

Early Childhood Minister Peter Garrett said this meant more than four in five indigenous children were attending preschool.
