NSW Premier not backing down on greyhound racing ban

A MEETING with members of the greyhound racing industry has not swayed Mike Baird's intention to ban the sport across New South Wales.

The Premier and Racing Minister Troy Grant sat down with industry officials on Thursday to hear their concerns about the July 2017 shutdown.

He launched into a Twitter flurry shortly after the discussion, shooting off 19 tweets about why the decision was made and reiterating the government's resolve to ban the practice.

"When parliament resumes, we will introduce the legislation to ban greyhound racing," he said.

"The legislation will be debated. And it will pass."

Mr Baird rattled off excerpts from the inquiry into the industry outlining widespread animal cruelty.

He quoted a section of the report saying it was not uncommon for unwanted greyhounds to be drained of their blood under anaesthetic before being euthanised, so the blood could be used in the treatment of others.

"I feel deep empathy for innocent participants and we will work to support them," Mr Baird said.

"But the report is clear and the right decision has been made."

On Wednesday, Sydney's premier greyhound track Wentworth Park held its first meet since the ban was announced.

Greyhound Breeders, Owners Trainers Association officials urged attendees to sign a petition before August 2 when the banning bill will be introduced to parliament, as the industry prepared to mount a legal challenge. -ARM NEWSDESK
