Norco says thanks for support and community spirit

A GRATEFUL message from Norco Co-operative on its Facebook page, to its customers, expresses its appreciation for the support it received during the recent 'milk wars'.

When milk prices were reduced to ridiculous levels of $1 a litre, effectively leaving the dairy farmer out in the cold, media personality from Channel 10's The Project, Waleed Aly, strongly urged people to buy branded milk.

"Our immediate reaction was to settle down and see how it will play out,” Norco chairperson Greg McNamara said.

"We started putting a lot more energy into our brand milk and went to our retailers and asked for more shelf space.

"We didn't know if it would be a one day thing or if (the reaction to the call to buy branded milk) would go on.”

The irony for Norco was not only do they have their own brand of milk, but they also supply milk to the generic Coles brand.

"We saw a huge drop in sales (initially) as we are a major supplier to Coles between the Sunshine Coast in the north and Port Macquarie in the south,” Mr McNamara said.

"We have a really good relationship with Coles so they gave us more fridge space (for the branded milk) and they also gave us access to 77 more stores.

"So we now sell our milk as far north as Cairns.”

Mr McNamara said the sale of branded milk increased by 30%.

"I guess the story here is that you can make a difference individually,” he said.

"It inspired us to think the Australian spirit is not lost and that we do care about people and country.”

Sales of Norco's cheese, custard and cream also increased, althought not as high as the milk.

"This doesn't just help our farmers but also our staff and delivery people,” Mr McNamara said.

The future for Norco is looking bright with a commitment of $30 million to be spent on capital expenditure, their highest ever, for the 2015-16 financial year in their ice cream and milk plants.
