Support for stripping terrorists of Australian citizenship

STRIPPING dual nationals of their Australian citizenship if they choose to fight for a terrorist organisation is one policy that has public support.

Member for Page Kevin Hogan recently voiced his support for the policy on his Facebook page and asked what his followers' thoughts were.

Of more than 250 comments, most approved of the proposed policy.

Grahame Macdonald responded, saying such people were 'treacherous bastards'.

Another, Greg Pearson, said he supported the proposed policy as long as each case was assessed individually and went through the courts.

"I think the comments say it," Mr Hogan said.

"If you are prepared to fight for a terrorist organisation that goes against our values, then stay there."

Mr Hogan said he also saw support for the policy in the community and from both sides of the political spectrum.

"People are concerned," he said.

"The community doesn't want them to come back here and feeling that their safety is threatened."

The MP said the government was aware of the weight of such a move.

"We are very conscious this is a big step," he said.

"The decision wouldn't be at the minister's whim. There would be a due diligence process."

Mr Hogan said the United Nations had to recognise the body as a terrorist organisation.

He said the policy would not apply to people with single citizenship.

Also, they would look at age and other factors.

"What we are looking to do is at least have the ability to remove citizenship," he said.

"This is not an automatic thing."

A POLL on www.dailyexaminer.com.au this week asked 'What should the consequence be for fighting with terrorists?', and found similar views to Mr Hogan's question.

The results were:

If they are a dual citizen, they should be stripped of their Australian citizenship and deported: 42%

Even if they only have Australian citizenship, it should be stripped, thus making them stateless: 28%

They should be encouraged to come home for rehabilitation: 13%

When they return to Australia they should be thrown in prison and interrogated by ASIO to find recruiters: 15%
