Gen Y mums rely on Facebook to meet and keep in touch

GENERATION Y mums have a more laid back attitude compared to their older counterparts.

A Fisher-Price survey showed that of 500 Australian mums surveyed, 53% revealed their biggest priority in an average day was spending time with their child playing and helping them to develop.

Another trend Gen Y mums showed was their dependency on social media.

Melissa Howes, 20, said she was reliant on social media to keep in touch with friends while at home with her toddler.

Melissa met a few friends in her area on Facebook who were also young mums.

"We meet up maybe once a week with our babies. They are all around the same age," she said.

"We kind of learn off each other too."

She and boyfriend Matthew Heald have a 13-month-old daughter, Billie Leigh Heald.

Melissa fell pregnant during Year 12. Completing her studies in 2011, the now full-time stay-at-home mum is glad she continued and finished her education.

Matthew is an apprentice plumber, but will be signed off as a tradesman in July.

Melissa said the family struggled financially.

"In July we're thinking of getting our own place," she said. "I have considered a part-time job but day care is so expensive that it would probably be a step backwards.

"I don't look at getting money to buy clothes anymore. Now it's nappies."

Through the day she spends time with Billie, and does housework while the toddler is sleeping.

"I look at other kids whose parents are older and I see no difference in them and Billie, so clearly we are doing something right," Melissa said.

"Having Billie has made me respect my parents more."
