Nicole Kidman's shock frock at the SAG Awards

THE odds of Nicole Kidman taking home her second Oscar will become clearer when the SAG awards are announced today.

The extent of Mel Gibson's Hollywood rehabilitation will also be tested - as well as Andrew Garfield's nomination for best actor, the director's comeback film, Hacksaw Ridge, features in the stunt ensemble category.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are seen as a reliable bellwether for the Academy Awards - last year, three out of the four winners went on to win a golden statuette (in 2015, the score was four out of four.)

After winning Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 2016 SAG Awards, Spotlight went on to land Best Picture at last year's Oscars.

While Australia has a record number of Oscar nominations this year - Lion and Hacksaw Ridge have six apiece - competition is fierce.

Most industry observers believe the main prizes will be split between La La Land, Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea

Garfield's intense performance in Gibson's bloody WWII drama has been well-received by critics, but Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea) is the favourite in this category. Ryan Gosling (La La Land) is his closest rival.

Kidman is up for a best supporting actress award for her emotionally vulnerable performance in Lion, in which she plays a Tasmanian woman who adopts an orphaned Indian boy.

Also nominated in this category are Golden Globe-winner Viola Davis (Fences), Naomie Harris (Moonlight), Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) and Michelle Williams (Manchester by the Sea).

Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel is nominated for best supporting actor for his performance in Lion, based on the true story of Saroo Brierley, alongside Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins) and Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea).

Lily Tomlin is to be honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

KIDMAN'S FROCK SHOCK STUNS FANS

Nicole Kidman chose to wear a Gucci green gown with a plungeing neck line, which had what looked like parrots on either side of it on her broad shoulders. While it was haute couture to some, it did not go down well with onlookers.

Many jumped on social media to criticise her for it, saying it was a "crazy" choice" and "unconventional but it works". Others claimed it was a "polly want a cracker" dress and just couldn't get over its strange design.
