All roads lead to Rome for colossal question

GLADSTONE blokes - the bar has been set and it is mighty high.

Martin Greenhalgh, a born and bred Gladstone expatriate, has trumped the romance cards, making girls swoon with envy and guys swear under their breath.

Travelling to seven continents and the seven new wonders of the world, Mr Greenhalgh sunk to one knee for his now fiancee Rachael Weidman, once the pair reached their final wonder - the Colosseum in Rome.

"I looked her in the eyes and immediately got that ball stuck in the back of my throat," he said.

"Those preciously planned words all got jumbled in my head.

"After seven years together, in our seventh continent and at our seventh new wonder of the world, I wanted her to be my wife."

Antarctica, Mexico and Egypt are a far cry from Mr Greenhalgh's humble central Queensland roots - but a quiet Gladstone wedding is not yet off the cards for the newly engaged couple.

"We're still travelling at present and haven't decided on a date or location just yet," Mr Greenhalgh said.

"Gladstone has had quite a big influence in shaping my future. I met a lot of lifelong friends who have taught me so much and whom I'm still in contact with today."

The former Gladstone State High student said planning the perfect proposal, with his father-in-law-to-be's permission and all, was a challenge as great as conquering the 6088m Huayna Potosi in Bolivia.

"Planning a proposal is kind of difficult when you are with your partner 24/7," he said.

"As we arrived at the Colosseum it was around 10pm and crowded.

"I found a quiet spot, stopped and held Rachael's hands. In typical Rachael fashion, she grasped at the ring like it was the last piece of chocolate on Earth and said yes.

"I couldn't be happier."
