New farmers market launching at Alstonville on Saturday

IT'S taken a bit of effort, but Alstonville finally has its own farmers' market and the first one will be held this Saturday.

Run by Steve Cooke, the market will have plenty of fresh produce including bananas, lettuce, avocados, eggs, vegetables, ginger beer and flowers.

Talented musicians will provide entertainment each week.

Mr Cooke has years of experience operating markets. He was instrumental in setting up the successful market at The Channon and also worked with Marny Bonner to establish the Lismore Car Boot Market.

He is optimistic that the Alstonville Farmers Market will be popular.

"I really believe that each little community deserves to have a market where locals can gather, trade and exchange, and just enjoy themselves," he said.

"Although this one is being run by me as a private individual, it is for the benefit of the farmers and the people.

"I think there is an incredible groundswell of support in the community.

"I've visited every shop in Alstonville and I'm hearing that people want this to work."

The farmers' market will be held on Saturday mornings in the Bugden Lane car park.

In the future Mr Cooke also hopes to introduce a small stall option for suburban gardeners with excess produce to sell.

"Sometimes the passionfruit might come on and you've suddenly got 50 of them that you don't need, or you keep giving your eggs away to the neighbours," he said.

"This would be perfect for those people."

Mr Cooke is looking for not-for-profit groups to run the barbecue each week as a fundraising venture.

Sporting groups, charities, clubs, social groups and schools are welcome to register their interest.
