New aviation rescue firefighters start at Ballina airport

TWO new aviation rescue firefighters will start work at the Ballina Byron Gateway Airport this week following their graduation from Airservices Learning Academy in Melbourne.

The elite group of recruits completed 11 weeks of theoretical and practical training.

Airservices general manager Learning Academy, Linda Spurr, congratulated the graduates on finishing the intensive course.

"They train on our state-of-the-art hot fire training ground in Melbourne where they have the opportunity to put their new skills to use in fighting simulated aircraft and structural fires," she said.
