Love coffee? Readers name the Northern Rivers' best cafes

NORTHERN Rivers locals love their coffee - and now we know where they like to indulge in their habit.

Last week we asked our Facebook readers to nominate their favourite place to get coffee on the Northern Rivers, and for everyone to vote by 'liking' the comments.

In total, 70 Northern Rivers coffee shops were named in the Facebook status, and a total of 705 votes cast.

The top five coffee shops were named as:

  • Sirocco Café and Gallery, Ballina (32 votes);
  • ESP Espresso Bar, Alstonville (55 votes);
  • Café Swish, Ballina (86 votes);
  • Flock Espresso and Eats, Lismore (86 votes)
  • Orio Café Patisserie Bar, Alstonvile  (101 votes).

The owners of Orio Café, which is located on the edge of the Alstonville Plaza complex, near the Main Street roundabout, Steve and Katie Gassner said it "made their day" to find out their café was so loved.

Mrs Gassner said they pride themselves on their professionalism and simply aim to please - and at the end of the day, if you're doing all you can to please your customers, that's the most important thing.

Mrs Gassner has been in the café business for 30 years, while Mr Gassner, who works as the chef at Orio, has been working in the field for 38 years.

"It's what we know and love," Mrs Gassner said.

"At the end of the day it's the awesome (customers) that come in that make it worth it."

So what makes their café so great?

"I reckon it's all about consistency. As far as coffee goes, we have a couple of trained baristas, so only a few people are making it," she said.

In addition, they provide quick and friendly service, thanks to their workers - "I'm very lucky to have wonderful staff," Mrs Gassner said.

Other honorable mentions went to Café Capello Lismore (with Barista Tony singled out by one commenter), Republic of Coffee Lismore, That New Coffee Shop Ballina, La Baracca Lismore, The Belle General Ballina, and Jesspresso at Lismore Car Boot Market.
