NASCAR champion already eyeing record

MOTORSPORT: Californian Jimmie Johnson was still trying to digest claiming his seventh NASCAR Sprint Cup championship when team owner Rick Hendrick, of Hendrick Racing, started talking about title No.8.

The 41-year-old driver is now tied with Richard Petty and the late Dale Earnhardt snr for most titles.

"You think about what it would mean to see Jimmie get eight,” Hendrick said. "I'm excited to see he and (co-driver) Chad (Knaus) try to break the record now, because we're tied. And you can't get to eight until you get to seven.”

Johnson dominated NASCAR from 2006 to 2010, securing a record five successive championships, before claiming a sixth in 2013 and seventh at Homestead-Miami Speedway in the last race of 2016.
