Surfing Mums making waves

IF YOU’RE a mum and you like hanging out at the beach, a new branch of Surfing Mums will be meeting at Torakina Beach in Brunswick Heads each Thursday from 10.30am until 12.30.

“Byron Bay has a large surfing mums group, but I wanted to get something started that was more convenient for mums in this area,” Brunswick Heads co-ordinator and Ocean Shores resident Emma Waters said.

“The idea is that we meet at Torakina Beach, which is protected and great for splashing around with the kids, and then we take it in turns of surfing or even just having a swim at the nearby main beach with one mum supervising a maximum of two kids at any time,” she said.

“Over time we will build up a contact list so mums can organise a surf with other mums whenever the surf is calling.”

While Emma is a keen surfer with 15 years’ experience, fellow surfing mum Jess Nock, from Byron Bay, admits she is just learning.

“For me it’s a chance to meet other mums who love the beach and to get out and do something active,” she said.

“I existed on meeting friends for coffee and cake when Leila was born, but after a while you feel like you want to get out there and have a healthier lifestyle. Plus, you can always bring the cake to the beach.”

Mums with kids of any age are welcome and Emma has spare surfboards available.

Surfing Mums is an established network of mums across Australia, started by Byron Bay mum Vanessa Thompson in 2008.

The group now represents almost 500 mums (and some dads too) across the country.

Surfing Mums offers memberships which include insurance, a hat or T-shirt and access to events, weekends away and annual gatherings.

Brunswick Heads Surfing Mums will meet again after Christmas on Thursday, January 6, from 10.30am and then weekly after that.
