TOOWOOMBA mother Renee O'Brien knows better than most about what makes a female- friendly workplace.

The affable, single mother of two is the McCafe co-ordinator at McDonald's Toowoomba West restaurant and loves the fact that her full-time work gives her the flexibility to take care of her kids.

The restaurant was one of a number of Toowoomba businesses to make the Employer of Choice for Women List released by Equal Opportunity in the Workplace for Women this week.

"I've been working here for more than seven years and the flexibility and ability to advance in my role are very important to me," she said. "It's great to be able to have the time to look after my children."

McDonald's Toowoomba West licensee Keith Beer said providing flexible hours to mothers was an important part of his business.

"Mums working as little as a couple of shifts a week can still access the great career development opportunities on offer," he said.

"This means our mums can choose to work at night so they can spend the day with their children, or work during the day while the kids are at school."

To qualify for the list, businesses had to cover issues including pay equity, women in executive management, flexibility, tackling gender-based harassment and career development training.
