Casino hospital to get $3m emergency department upgrade

A $3 MILLION redevelopment of the emergency department at the Casino and District Memorial Hospital will be announced today.

Federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersek and Page MP Janelle Saffin will be in Casino to talk about the funding commitment, saying it was a "momentous occasion" for residents and the region.

The redeveloped emergency department at the hospital will include four new treatment bays and two new resuscitation bays.

The ambulance entry area will be redesigned.

The redevelopment will also include a multifunctional safe assessment room, new triage area, relocated waiting area, piped medical gases to resuscitation and observation bays and a dedicated emergency department staff room.

Security for the new emergency department will be improved.

Ms Plibersek visited the Casino and District Memorial Hospital with Ms Saffin in October last year.

She said she saw "first-hand the pressing need for an upgrade of the emergency department at the hospital".

"I was so impressed by the hard-working staff at Casino hospital and this redeveloped emergency department will mean they have facilities that match their dedication," Ms Plibersek said.

Ms Saffin said she had deliberately taken the Health Minister to the Casino hospital so she could gain an understanding of the desperate need for the upgrade of the emergency department.

"Once Tanya had seen the facility and had a good opportunity to talk to the staff I was then able to continue to lobby and detail all the things that needed to be done to bring this facility up to the national standard," Ms Saffin said.

"I know the staff were glad that I brought Tanya and they'll be particularly glad following today's announcement."

Ms Plibersek said that without the "tireless lobbying" efforts of Ms Saffin, the commitment to spend $3 million on the Casino hospital might not have happened.

The announcement will be made at the hospital at 11am.
