Movie review: Project X

REMEMBER that kid Corey Worthington became notorious after throwing an outrageous party in 2008 while his parents were on holidays and which attracted 500 destructive guests and the local police.

Project X is an ode to the Melbourne party boy, it is even rumored to have been based on Worthington himself.

He tagline reads 'The party you've only dreamed about' and if you were 17 it would mostly certainly be.

Shot using found-footage Project X attempts to be a combination of Weird Science, Superbad and the Hangover but veers more on the trashy side than the comical.

The height of the humor involves a midget being shoved into an oven and then punching people in the groin.

The characters themselves are for the most part completely unlikable, the trio of leads are unrepentant, narcissistic and charmless.

Their ultimate goal; popularity and to get laid.

The Inbetweeners showed that this indulgence of irresponsibility can get garner big laughs; the difference was that film used brain and heart.

Project X is more like its stupid cousin than its equal.

However, what the film does have going for it is its use of found-footage which gives viewers front row to the action and the party itself is a teenage dream of steroids and engrossingly entertaining in voyeuristic way.

The cinematography truly is superb with some brilliant shots and sequences especially as the film builds to its frenzy of chaos.

But is disturbing about Project X is the message it leaves viewers with.

Throw an epic party, cause thousands of dollars of damage and get arrested.

But it will all be worth it as it will make you incredibly popular and land the girl of your dreams.

Questionable messages aside it is a fun ride.
