MOVIE REVIEW: Manchester by the Sea worthy of Oscar buzz

AWARDS season is upon us once again and while a surprising number of best picture candidates aren't getting the wide, Australian release you'd expect following the Oscar buzz, thankfully local audiences won't miss out on Kenneth Lonergan's latest piece of melancholy cinema, Manchester By The Sea.

Casey Affleck's grounded but powerful performance hasn't gone unnoticed; easily the favourite to pick up the best actor Oscar at this year's Academy Awards.

It's a hard point to argue, his portrayal of the troubled Lee Chandler is easily one of the finest of the actor's career.

A broken shell of his former self, Lee must return to his hometown of Manchester-by-the-sea following the death of his older brother where he learns that he's been named the guardian of his teenage nephew Patrick.

In suitable Lonergan style, the film never shies away from dealing with extreme emotional turmoil but it's not the magnitude of the events themselves that make Manchester By The Sea as good as it is.

When most films would cut away, Lonergan keeps the camera rolling to capture the nuanced moments films rarely delve into.

Add the fantastic, subtle performances from not just leading man Affleck, but the entire cast and you get a film so true to life that the emotional moments are truly heartbreaking and sometimes even inspiring.

Manchester by the Sea opens nationally tomorrow.
