The most cringe-worthy tribute to George Michael

A FLOOD of heartfelt tributes is coming in on social media for British pop legend George Michael.

But if you're going to offer your condolences, at least make sure you're getting the name right.

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar took to Twitter to pay tribute to the musician. Only she got the wrong one.

Awkward Twitter

Uh - Sarah? Boy George is thankfully still very much alive.

People on social media were quick to take note.

The actress removed the tweet after about 15 minutes, and issued a clarification.

Michael passed away at age 53.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period," his publicist said in a statement.

"The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage."
