More Aussies gambling than ever before

MORE Australians are gambling on sports than ever before, with one in seven regularly taking a punt online, research shows.

Research released this week by the Australian Gambling Research Centre showed spending on sports betting was up - doubling between 2005-06 and 2011-12.

It showed half of all sports betting was now done online, and commercial arrangements with sports organisations may be crucial to the growth.

Southern Cross University Professor Nerilee Hing said young men felt pressure to gamble to "fit in".
