A HEALTHY dish that's easy to cook and has plenty of flavour is what punters can expect at a cooking demonstration in Ballina by My Kitchen Rules contestants Paul Bullpitt and Blair Tonkin.

The Gold Coast "surfer dads" were on the show earlier this year, and will be special guests at the Rotary Club of Ballina-on-Richmond's Ballina Fine Wine and Food Festival.

Their message, Paul said, was that "it's not too hard to chuck together a healthy meal that's nice and easy".

He said their demonstration would aim to satisfy the more experienced cooks in the audience, but also cater to those who weren't such a dab hand in the kitchen.

Paul has always been a keen cook. He said he left home at 17 and his mum told him that if he wanted to enjoy the food he had at home, he'd have to learn to cook it.

So he left the nest with a repertoire of dishes.

But for blokes who are less keen in the kitchen, Paul said it didn't take much to get started.

"Once you get a few basic ideas in your head, it's not hard to start that momentum," he said.

He said celebrity chefs now were like rock stars so more young men were getting into cooking. Since being on the television show, he said the pair was now recognised a lot, but he definitely didn't put himself in the rock star category.

Paul and Blair are both keen surfers and plan to get among the waves in Ballina. Paul's brother, Mick, used to live in Ballina so he is familiar with North Wall and Lennox Point.

The Ballina Fine Wine and Food Festival will be held undercover and inside at the Ballina Jockey Club on July 20 from noon to 5pm.

There will be more than 50 exhibitors.
