WARATAHS coach Michael Cheika has dropped 63-Test Wallaby veteran Drew Mitchell for tonight's crucial match against the Cheetahs at Allianz Stadium.

Mitchell made several uncharacteristic handling errors in last Saturday's disappointing 35-6 loss to the Brumbies and is yet to produce his best form this season.

The axing is one of six personnel and two positional changes made by Cheika who said there was no room in the side for under-performing stars.

Berrick Barnes comes in for his first game of the Super Rugby campaign, while Pat McCutcheon takes over at No.8 in place of the injured Wycliff Palu, allowing captain Dave Dennis to revert to his regular position of blindside flanker.

Winger Lachie Turner has been elevated from the bench and will partner Peter Betham who comes in for Mitchell.

Israel Folau has been given another opportunity at fullback in place of Ben Volavola who drops back to the bench.

Hooker John Ulugia takes over from the injured Tatafu Polota-Nau, while Paddy Ryan will start at tight-head.
