Millman ready to replace Kyrgios in Davis Cup team
TENNIS: Queensland's John Millman is on standby to replace injured Nick Kyrgios in Australia's Davis Cup team for next week's World Group playoff with Slovakia in Sydney.
Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt had to nominate his team to the ITF overnight and planned to include Kyrgios alongside Bernard Tomic, doubles specialist John Peers and Sam Groth or James Duckworth.
But the hip injury that forced Kyrgios's withdrawal from the US Open in New York could open the door for Millman, regarded by Hewitt as Australia's next best singles player.
Kyrgios is Australia's top-ranked player at 16th, followed by Tomic (19) and Millman (66).
Millman has rebuilt his career after injury. He lost in five sets in the first round of the US Open to eighth seed Dominic Thiem.
