Midget among pioneers to surf on Cooloola Coast

AS THE Australian surfing community reflects on the life of surfing legend Bernard "Midget" Farrelly after his death early this week, stories are emerging of Midget's travels and adventures in search of the perfect wave.

It was during those travels that Midget helped pave the way for one of the Rainbow Beach's tourism drawcards.

He was among the pioneering surfers who made the long trip to Double Island Point in the '60s to enjoy long rides with the entire point all to themselves.

The point has since become a minor surfing nirvana, and will be found on most surfers' bucket lists.

He appeared in Bob Evans' 1968 surf film Ride a White Horse, surfing Double Island and Noosa alongside fellow surfing legends Nat Young, George Greenough and Bob McTavish.
