Metgasco to be asked to have a heart and pull out

A VALENTINE'S Day event with a twist will be held today when protesters gather outside Metgasco's Casino offices calling on the mining company to "have a heart" and cease operations on the Northern Rivers.

Members of Gasfield Free Northern Rivers are calling on people to join them armed with Valentine's Day cards, balloons and chocolates to send a message to Metgasco they oppose the company's project at Bentley.

The NSW Government approved Metgasco's project to explore for tight gas at Bentley last week.

"Although 87% of Lismore residents voted 'No' to CSG in a council-commissioned poll, Metgasco still plans to explore for tight gas at a site that is just 10 minutes from Lismore," said Gasfield Free Northern Rivers member Ruth Rosenhek.

"Valentine's Day is all about love and we, residents of the Northern Rivers, love this land, the water, fertile soil, beautiful landscapes and the healthy vibrant community.

"We are asking heart-to-heart that Metgasco put a halt to their activities in this region.

"We are asking nicely now before we are forced to defend the land we love from a dangerous industry that has no social licence."

Metgasco CEO Peter Henderson said Metgasco respects the rights of people to express their views and to protest.

"All we ask is that protesters respect our rights and those of our employees, contractors and the landholders we work with," he said.

Anyone interested in joining in is asked to assemble outside Metgasco's offices for an 11am start.
